Anonymous asked: Sorry, I don't have a Tumblr, but I have a question for you. I'm interested in interning for Ms. Magazine. I read that you interned there. Do you have any tips or suggestions on ways to stand out amongst other applicants? I'd love to intern for a feminist or LGBTQ non-profit in general. Just any tips you can give me would be much appreciated!
I did intern there! It was quite a while ago, though, and it was before Feminist Majority took ownership of the magazine, so I’m not sure I can give you a lot of great insight into the way the magazine functions now. That said, I think there are plenty of ways you can try to stand out from other applicants.
In my experience, being gently persistent in following up works pretty well. I don’t mean email them every day to check in on your resume - I mean make sure you relay how committed you are. You could send clips in addition to just your cover letter and a resume. You could request a 10 minute phone call with an editor (or for an org, someone who works there) to tell you more about the work they do. You could also write a blog post and send it to them saying, this is along the lines of what I’d like to do for your org/publication. Any one else have tips?
